Tallinn Estonia-Day 9
Arrived at 07:00 and tied up next to the “Costa Pacifica”, a
sister ship to the Costa Concordia. That was the ship that had the collision
off Italy and rolled partly over. Being right next to a ship of that size
really drives home the calamity that it turned out to be, all so an Italian
ship’s captain could impress his girlfriend.
Tour time again: a walking tour of the old city of Tallinn.
As with this region, there were at least 2,000 wars with boundaries shifting,
allegiances changing, royalty coming and going, churches/monasteries/nunneries
being built and destroyed, etc. Our guide again knew the history of each and
just had to tell us. Our feet and ears hurt.
We have noticed that this area of the world REALLY digs churches!
Sad to see there are poor folks everywhere.
And more churches.
A lovely old town with narrow cobblestone streets. Very much
in the process of becoming a totally tourist town.
Tallinn gets 350 cruise ships between July and September,
the months that cruise ships can navigate the waters nearby. That puts 450,000
(by the guide’s count) onto the cobblestone streets designed for wheeled carts.
Ugly.
Off to St. Petersburg!
